There are 8 lakes and 2 rivers in Calgary. While you can paddle the rivers, all but 1 of the lakes are open to the public.  The best beaches in Calgary are all behind fences. The one that is left to the public is crowded.

Unless you have a friend in a lake community, you’re not getting in. So when it comes to looking for a place to cool off on a hot summer day, you’re best to head to some of the best outdoor pools in Calgary.

They may not have the beach, but they do have the sun and the water – and maybe a cocktail or two.

Riley Park

This huge wading pool is an oasis on the edge of the city. Bring a blanket and a picnic, watch the people tossing frisbees and playing cricket in the huge field while your kids wander this massive pool that will barely be waist deep on a toddler. It is the perfect family place on a weekend.

Hotel Arts

This is the new hip spot in town, you don’t have to be a guest and you can’t make reservations. Show up after 11 on the weekend and you’re likely waiting for 2 hours to get a spot in the sun.
