Bear’s Hump | Waterton Lakes National Park
2km return
240m Elevation gain
Saw all ages on the trail, but it is a short, steep hike

Waterton Lakes National Park is a hiker’s paradise. There are all sorts of trails one can take along the lakeshore, into the back country, across the other side of the lake, or directly from the Waterton Townsite campground. Pick your distance, the reward you’d like at the end and you can find something you’ll enjoy.

There’s waterfalls, alpine lakes, Red Rock Canyon, or summits with incredible views. The Bear’s Hump offers the latter, a short, steep hike partway up Mount Crandell that offers an incredible 270 degree view of Waterton Lakes and valleys.

It took some negotiation to get Zacharie up this trek, but thankfully there are benches along the way to take a break. To get to the trailhead, park at the Waterton Lakes Information Centre, and take the path from the parking lot. This can be a very busy place, so you may have to sneak across the way and park at the Prince of Wales Hotel, or you could even walk all the way from the Waterton Townsite giving yourself an extra kilometre to warm up.

Hat tip to Tanya Koob of Rockies Family Adventures for her excellent Waterton Lakes posts which helped guide what Zacharie and I would tackle on this trip.
