The Course

Popular with seniors, junior golfers, and those wanting to get a ‘quickie’ in, the Valley 9 at Shaganappi Point Golf Course is just what you’re looking for. With 6 par 4s and 3 par 3s, the course is perfect to work on your iron game and shot placement. Mid handicappers can play the course just fine from the blues, but that does stretch the par 3s out a bit to nearly 200 yards. I played from the back on the long holes, closer up for the par 3s.

This is the perfect place to just ‘play some golf,’ have a nice walk in the sunshine, and know that it’s not going to take you forever to get around.

The Facilities

It’s a city course, so there’s not much other than a very old cinder block building selling old hot dogs, pre-made sandwiches, and coffee. It’s disappointing, really. When you’re standing in line and staring over the skyline of the city down below you just wonder what could be done if the facility in private hands. A huge rooftop patio overlooking the 2 golf courses, the Bow River valley below, and downtown in the distance would easily be one of the most popular patios in the city.

But it’s a city facility, they run it at as a service, not necessarily a business, and it is what it is.

Favorite Hole

The 4th hole of the Valley 9 is a nice little downhill dogleg to the right. At only 261 from the tips, it’s easily reachable if you can shape your shot properly, but really it’s just a 7 iron and a wedge and a couple of putts to get home.

The best part of the hole is the glimpse of the water to come on the 5th, 7th, and 8th holes, while being able to wander a sloping fairway with huge trees.

Shaganappi Point Valley 9 Golf Course

For a quick, easy swing of the clubs, the Valley 9 at Shaganappi Point really hits the point. Our 8:41 tee time had us done in precisely 90 minutes, despite having to wait for the group ahead of us on a couple of holes. A later day start would see you on the course for closer to 2 hours, and the waiting at the tee boxes might be a little more frustrating.
